From Smoke to Slopes in SoCal
Man-Made Snow Down South Fresh Powder at Mammoth
SoCal Snow Report: Fires, Skiing, and What You Need to Know 🏂🔥❄️
Hey there, SoCal Snow Enthusiasts!
We’re deep into ski season, and while conditions are a mix of man-made and natural snow down south, there’s some fresh powder calling from Mammoth! Here’s how the recent fires and snow conditions are shaping up for SoCal and beyond.
The Fires in Focus 🔥
Eaton Canyon Fire
Ignited January 7, 2025, near Altadena and Pasadena.
Destroyed over 7,000 structures and devastated local communities.
Palisades Fire
Burned through 23,713 acres near Pacific Palisades.
Over 5,300 structures lost, with smoke affecting surrounding regions.
Fortunately, Southern California’s ski resorts, like Mountain High, Big Bear, and Snow Valley, remain far from the fire zones and are open for action.
What’s the Impact on Skiing? 🏔️
1. Snow Conditions
Man-Made Snow Down South:
Resorts like Mountain High and Big Bear have relied on snowmaking to keep trails open. Conditions are firm and groomed, great for carving but less ideal for off-piste adventures.
Natural Snow at Mammoth:
Mammoth Mountain received solid snowfall in December and early January. While it’s not dumping daily, the upper slopes still have excellent coverage, making it a prime destination for powder lovers.
2. Air Quality
Smoke from the fires has lingered but is improving in most mountain areas. Check AQI reports before heading out, especially for resorts closer to the fire zones.
3. Road Access
Access routes to southern resorts are open, but smoky conditions could cause temporary closures. Mammoth is clear for travel, though snow chains may be required during storms.
Where to Ski Right Now
Mountain High
Conditions: Groomed and firm, thanks to snowmaking efforts.
Tips: Arrive early for the best runs and lighter crowds. Sunrise tickets are a great option!
Big Bear & Snow Summit
Conditions: Heavy reliance on snow guns, with smooth trails and a thin base.
Tips: Ideal for beginners or those looking for a quick day trip.
Snow Valley
Conditions: Limited terrain is open, perfect for families or first-timers.
Tips: Check for daily updates on trail availability.
Mammoth Mountain
Conditions: Natural snow on upper elevations, with groomers and powder runs in good shape.
Tips: Head to the top of the mountain for the best conditions. Chair 23 and the backside offer great snow for advanced skiers.
Safety Tips for Your Ski Trip 🛑
Check Air Quality: Use apps like AirNow or PurpleAir.
Plan for the Snow: Bring gear suited to groomers for SoCal resorts and powder-ready equipment if heading to Mammoth.
