Rain in the Forecast: What It Means for SoCal Skiers

Learn about the potential impacts of the upcoming weather on your ski plans.

Where’s the Snow, SoCal? ❄️

Hey there, snow chasers! It’s January 23, 2025, and if you’ve been staring at those mountain webcams with longing (and maybe a little side-eye), you’re not alone. Where’s all the snow this season? 🌨️

Dry Days but Not Done Yet 🏔️
So far, this season has been stingy with the snowflakes, leaving Southern California’s slopes dustier than usual. Unlike the bountiful snowfall we’ve reveled in the past few years, Mother Nature has kept us waiting. And according to NOAA, the January drought was no fluke—it was expected. But don’t hang up those skis yet because, spoiler alert, there’s some good news in the forecast!

Rain on the Horizon: February's Hope 🌦️
This week, Southern California is finally getting a break with some much-needed rainfall. That’s not just good news for fire relief—it’s a potential lifeline for ski season! Cooler temperatures and precipitation are creeping into the forecast for February. If the mountains play their cards right, this means increased snowmaking opportunities and maybe even a surprise powder day or two. Fingers crossed for Mammoth-level miracles!

Resorts Are Still Open & Ready 🎿
Even with limited snowfall, our favorite SoCal resorts are keeping the dream alive. Here’s what’s happening this week and beyond:

  • Mountain High (Wrightwood):

    • Making magic with snow guns to keep trails groomed.

    • Events this weekend:

      • Saturday, January 25: Free rail jam at The Playground with $5,000 in prizes.

      • Sunday, January 26: "Boarding for Breast Cancer" event with music, raffles, vendors, and a fun slalom race.

  • Big Bear (Snow Summit):

    • The 7th Annual Ski California Safety Day is happening this Saturday, January 25. Learn tips, snag a 15% helmet discount, and get your safety game on point.

  • Mammoth Mountain:

    • Always the hero, Mammoth still boasts solid terrain thanks to higher elevation and consistent snowmaking. February could bring a powder refresh, but even now, the skiing is solid up top.

Rain’s Secret Role in Skiing 💧➡️❄️
For SoCal skiers, rain at lower elevations often means snow up high. While your neighborhood might look gloomy this weekend, the mountains could be waking up to a white blanket. Even if it’s not enough for natural runs, colder temps allow resorts to churn out fresh, machine-made snow. Every drop of rain pushes us closer to a better February.

The Takeaway
Sure, this year’s snowfall has been scarce, but the season isn’t over yet. So, stay tuned for more snow updates, pack your bags, and hit the mountains that are open and ready for action. Let’s remember: sometimes the best runs aren’t about the perfect powder—they’re about making the most of what you’ve got.

🏔️ Rain today, snow tomorrow.
