To Ski Lesson or Not? The Truth About Getting Better (+ a Must-Stop Bakery!)
Ski conditions, road trip stops, and pro tips—all inside!
Ski Lessons: Worth the Splurge or a Waste of Cash? 🎿
Hey Ski SoCal Insiders! ❄️
Ever stared at a ski school sign, wondering if dropping that cash is the key to shredding or just a mountain tax? Whether you (or someone in your crew) are a total newbie or a solid skier dreaming of tackling Mammoth’s Cornice, let's break it down.
BEGINNER SKIERS: TO LESSON OR NOT TO LESSON? 🟢
If you (or a friend, spouse, or kiddo) are still figuring out how to put on boots without looking like a newborn giraffe, lessons might be the move.
Pros:
✅ Safety First – Falling is part of the sport, but good lessons teach you how not to crash and burn.
✅ Faster Progress – Instead of spending half the day on your butt, you’ll actually ski.
✅ Avoid Bad Habits – Good form from day one saves pain (and frustration) later.
Cons:
⏳ Time Commitment – Less free time to mess around and explore.
💰 Cost – Group lessons aren’t too bad, but privates can be spendy.
😏 Ego Check – Learning in front of strangers can be humbling.
INTERMEDIATE SKIERS: DO YOU REALLY NEED A LESSON? 🔵
If you can cruise down Schoolyard at Mammoth or Miracle Mile at Big Bear but dream of sending Cornice Bowl, ski lessons might be the missing link.
Pros:
✅ Unlock Advanced Terrain – Steep, deep, and off-piste runs become doable.
✅ Fix That One Annoying Flaw – Your backseat stance? Your wedged turns? A coach will call it out.
✅ More Confidence, Less Panic – Because nobody wants to yard sale under the lift.
Cons:
💸 $$$ – Good instructors cost good money.
⏳ Patience Required – Progress takes time. You won’t suddenly ski like Mikaela Shiffrin.
👀 Vulnerability Check – Admitting you need help can be tough.
Sasha’s Take:
Once, I thought I didn’t need lessons. Then I took one, and BOOM—everything clicked. My turns felt easier, I wasted less energy, and suddenly, I wasn’t just surviving black diamonds—I was owning them.
Even pros have coaches. Just sayin'. 😉
🚗 FEATURED ROAD TRIP STOP: ERICK SCHAT’S BAKERY – BISHOP, CA 🍞
If you're heading to Mammoth, do not skip Erick Schat’s Bakery, located right off US-395 in Bishop, CA.
This isn’t just a bakery—it’s a road trip rite of passage. Open since 1938, this Dutch-inspired bakery is famous for its Sheepherder Bread, a chewy, crusty loaf so good it’s been trademarked. But the real magic? The endless cases of pastries, cookies, and fresh sandwiches that make every skier’s snack dreams come true.
What to Expect:
🏡 Quirky Exterior – The bakery looks straight out of a European village, with wooden beams, colorful signs, and even a windmill.
🗿 Odd Statue Alert – Out front stands a slightly eerie but iconic statue of a baker holding a loaf of bread. Legend has it, if you rub his nose, your sandwich will taste better. (Okay, I made that up—but try it anyway!)
🚗 Parking Lot Chaos – This place is always packed, so hit it early or prepare to battle fellow road-trippers for a spot.
What to Order:
🥖 Sheepherder Bread – The must-buy. Soft, chewy, and perfect for ski-day sandwiches.
🥐 Danishes & Strudels – Buttery, flaky, and stuffed with fruit or cream.
🥪 Turkey Pesto Sandwich – Trust me. It’s that good.
If you need a pre-Mammoth breakfast, a mid-drive sugar boost, or après-ski carb-loading, Erick Schat’s Bakery is a must-stop. Just don’t blame me if you walk out with more bread than you planned. 😉
