🌡️ Too Hot to Ski? Not Yet... But You Better Go Now
The heat wave is real. Closures have started. If you want turns, this is your window.
Winter didn’t end. It got pushed off the mountain.
This week feels wrong.
Not “spring is coming” wrong.
More like… July showed up early and didn’t ask permission. 😳
And the mountains?
They felt it first.
🥵 The Story: Scout Weekend Told Me Everything
Last Sunday, I was up at Big Bear.
Scout weekend.
Kids everywhere. Smiles. First turns. Wipeouts. Pure joy.
That kind of day reminds me why I love skiing.
I was riding chairs with parents.
Helping kids click in.
Watching brand new skiers find their flow.
But by mid-morning… something shifted.
The snow got heavy.
Edges stuck.
Speed died.
By noon, it wasn’t skiing.
It was pushing.
And I had that quiet moment again.
👉 “This isn’t spring skiing. This is the end creeping in.”
A few days later…
Snow Valley closed early
Mountain High closed early
Just like that.
The heat didn’t warn us.
It just took it.
☀️ What’s Happening Right Now
This is not normal spring.
This is a full heat wave.
Temps way above normal
Snow melting fast
No storms behind it
And in SoCal… that combo is brutal.
Our season is short already.
Heat like this?
It cuts it shorter.
🎿 Who’s Still Holding On
Not all is lost.
But the clock is ticking ⏳
Snow Summit / Big Bear → still open (for now)
Mammoth Mountain → still strong (for now)
And here’s the interesting move…
👉 Big Bear just dropped a “Buy Now, Ride Now” 26/27 Season Pass”
Yes… you read that right.
You can:
Buy next season
Ride the rest of this season
Right now.
That tells you everything.
Resorts know the melt is on.
They’re shifting from “season mode” to “bridge to next season” mode.
Smart if you’re planning ahead.
Even smarter if you want to squeeze in a few last laps before it’s gone.
⏳ What You Should Do Right Now
I’ll keep this simple.
👉 Go now.
Not next week.
Not “maybe.”
Now.
Here’s how to win:
Start early → best snow is first chair
Move with the sun → follow good snow
Wax your skis → this matters more than ever
Keep plans loose → short trips win
This is not planning season.
This is action season.
🌞 Why Spring Skiing Wins in SoCal
Spring skiing is not leftovers.
It is strategy skiing.
Here is why it shines:
✔️ Softer snow = easier edge grip
✔️ Fewer peak holiday crowds
✔️ Warm temps = lighter layers
✔️ Prime time for skill building
This is when confidence grows fast.
Soft snow forgives.
And forgiven mistakes build better skiers.
🎿 Spring Timing 101: Ski Smart
Timing is everything.
Follow this flow:
🕘 9:00 AM – Start east-facing.
🕚 11:00 AM – Shift south.
🕐 1:00 PM – Hunt west-facing terrain.
By mid-afternoon, things may get sticky.
Be early.
Be mobile.
Be smart.
Find your flow. 🌊
🧴 Wax or No Wax? Yes. Wax.
Spring snow is warm snow.
Warm snow without wax?
Slow.
Your options:
✅ DIY Warm-Temp Wax – Match the rising temps and dial it in yourself.
✅ Shop Hand Wax – Best glide and longest-lasting finish.
✅ Quick Lodge Wax – Easy on-mountain fix when you forget.
✅ Free REI Machine Wax (Members) – If you’re an REI member, many locations offer free machine waxes. They did mine in about 30 minutes. Quick. Easy.
Why bother?
🏂 Faster glide = less leg burn
🎿 Cleaner turns = better control
🛠️ Protected bases = longer ski life
💡 Pro Tip: Skiing two days? A quick mid-trip wax makes day two feel brand new.
🎉 Spring Events Heat Up
Spring is when the vibe shifts.
At Mammoth Mountain, things stay alive deep into the season.
Look for:
✔️ Weekend Après Parties
✔️ Skill Camps
✔️ The legendary Pond Skim in April
Sun. Music. Soft snow.
That is the vibe.

⛷️ Final Thoughts: Do Not Quit Early
This season is ending fast.
Faster than we wanted.
Faster than expected.
But it’s not over yet.
There is still time.
👉 One more day
👉 One more run
👉 One more memory
💡 Ski Wisdom to Remember
“Chase powder in winter. Chase timing in spring.”
