🏔️ Your Ski Mountain Looks Completely Different Right Now

The best Big Bear memories aren't always made in the snow.

Hey Ski Fam,

A few days ago I drove up to Big Bear expecting it to feel...different.

After all, there wasn't a single patch of snow on the mountain. No skis strapped to car roofs. No lift lines. No snow guns humming in the distance.

Instead, hikers filled the trails. Families paddled across the lake. Mountain bikers rolled off the Scenic Sky Chair with muddy tires and huge smiles. The smell of sunscreen had replaced the smell of ski wax.

And you know what?

It still felt like home.

That surprised me.

For years I thought I loved Big Bear because of skiing. But somewhere between a walk through the pines and watching the sun sparkle across Big Bear Lake, I realized I had it backwards.

I don't love Big Bear because it has snow.

I love Big Bear because it's where life slows down.

The snow is just a bonus. 🌲

☀️ Summer Shows You What Winter Hides

When we're skiing, we're always focused on the next turn.

We're reading the terrain, looking for ice, chasing our friends down the hill, and wondering if we have time for one more run before lunch.

We rarely stop long enough to notice the mountain itself.

Summer changes that.

The ski runs become hiking trails. The forests hidden beneath winter snow come alive with birds, wildflowers, and the scent of Jeffrey pines. The Scenic Sky Chair isn't taking you to your next run. It's giving you time to slow down and take it all in.

You begin to recognize the same ridges you ski every winter. Only now they're wearing green instead of white.

I caught myself pointing across the mountain saying, "That's my favorite run after a fresh storm."

It felt like seeing an old friend in everyday clothes instead of ski gear.

🚴 The Mountain Never Stops Teaching

One thing I love about Big Bear is that you don't have to ski to enjoy it.

A morning hike builds endurance you'll appreciate next winter. A mountain bike ride sharpens your balance without you even thinking about it. Paddling across the lake strengthens your core while giving your mind a break from traffic, deadlines, and screens.

Even a quiet walk through the forest reminds you to breathe a little deeper.

The funny part is that most of us think we're taking a break from skiing.

In reality, we're quietly becoming stronger for next season.

🌲 My Perfect Summer Day In Big Bear

If I could spend one perfect summer day in Big Bear, I wouldn't try to do everything.

I'd start with breakfast at Amangela's Sandwich & Bagel House, sitting outside with a hot cup of coffee while the town slowly wakes up.

Before the afternoon sun arrives, I'd head over to Cougar Crest Trail. It's one of my favorite hikes because every turn opens up another beautiful view of the lake, and by the time you reach the ridge, it's hard to believe you're only a couple of hours from Los Angeles.

From there, I'd make my way to Snow Summit for a ride on the Scenic Sky Chair. In the winter I'm usually focused on making my next turn. In the summer, I finally remember to look around.

Lunch would be somewhere in The Village, followed by an ice cream while wandering through the shops. No agenda. Just good food, mountain air, and nowhere else I need to be.

Later in the afternoon, I'd rent a kayak or paddleboard and spend an hour drifting across Big Bear Lake. No phone. No meetings. Just the sound of the water and the breeze through the pines.

Then I'd finish the day at Juniper Point, watching the sun slip behind the mountains as the lake turns gold.

No rush.

No schedule.

Just fresh mountain air and the kind of peace that's hard to find back in the city.

Funny enough, days like this make me even more excited for the first snowstorm.

❤️ Big Bear Is More Than A Winter Destination

I think that's what summer has taught me.

Big Bear isn't just a place I visit when it snows.

It's a place that helps me recharge.

It reminds me that adventure doesn't always mean going faster.

Sometimes adventure is slowing down long enough to notice what you've been driving past for years.

That's a lesson I probably needed more than I realized.

🎿 Big Lesson: Love The Mountain, Not Just The Snow

The happiest skiers I know don't disappear when the snow melts.

They stay connected to the mountains they love. They hike the trails they'll ski in December, paddle across the lake on warm afternoons, ride bikes through the pines, and share those places with friends and family.

When the first storm finally arrives, it doesn't feel like they're coming back.

It feels like they're simply changing seasons.

The mountain was waiting all along.
